If you’re anything like the rest of us, the holidays are a magical mix of family, food, chaos, and cozy sweaters. But they can also throw a serious wrench in your healthy habits. Between travel, parties, and endless plates of cookies, it’s easy to lose your routine. Luckily, you don’t have to give up your goals (or your favorite holiday treats) to stay on track. With a little planning and some mindfulness, you can enjoy the season while still feeling your best. If you need a little inspiration, this is for you. Let's jump into my top 7 tips to stay healthy during the holidays!

Top 7 Tips to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

1. Embrace Seasonal Vegetables

Eating seasonally is a great way to stay on budget while staying on track with your health goals. When it comes to fall and winter seasonal eating, think roasted Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and squash. They’re packed with nutrients and fiber, which help keep you full and energized.

Try adding a veggie-based dish to every meal…it’s a simple way to balance out heavier holiday foods without feeling deprived.

2. Get Plenty of Rest

Late nights, travel, and extra stress can really mess with your sleep. But to stay healthy and have the energy to make good decisions, you’ll still want to aim for 7–8 hours a night whenever possible. A good night’s sleep helps regulate your appetite, energy, and mood, which means you’ll be less likely to reach for that extra cookie (or three).

Don’t underestimate the power of rest. It’s one of the most underrated tools for staying healthy and sane during the holidays.

3. Set Clear Boundaries with Yourself

Be realistic about what you can and want to do this season. That might mean saying “no” to a few social events (three Friendsgivings is a little much), skipping a workout class to rest, or deciding ahead of time how many sweets you’ll enjoy at a party. Boundaries aren’t about restriction; they’re about balance and self-respect.

4. Limit Alcohol

Limit Alcohol

Between festive cocktails and holiday toasts, it’s easy to overdo it. Try alternating alcoholic drinks with sparkling water or mocktails, and aim to enjoy alcohol in moderation. You’ll feel more hydrated, sleep better, and likely have more energy to tackle your workouts (or just keep up with the crazy holiday schedule)!

5. Supplement Vitamin D

If you live somewhere with limited sunshine during winter, like I do, consider taking a Vitamin D supplement. It can help with mood, energy, and immunity, especially important during cold and flu season. Of course, check with your doctor first, but a little boost can make a big difference.

6. Get Outside Daily

Even if it’s chilly, bundle up and get some fresh air every day. A quick walk, a bit of sunshine, or even a few minutes in nature can lift your mood and help combat that sluggish holiday feeling.

Bonus: outdoor movement counts toward your daily activity, even if it’s not a “formal” workout!

7. Save Holiday Desserts for Special Occasions

Holiday treats are amazing, and you shouldn’t feel guilty for enjoying them! The key is to make them special again. Instead of grabbing sweets every day “just because they’re there,” save them for the moments that really matter, like your favorite family recipe or a special gathering. You’ll enjoy them more and feel better overall.

Final Thoughts on These Tips to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not stressed over. This season, focus on doing your best, not being perfect. A few missed workouts or extra cookies won’t ruin your progress, but giving in altogether might. (It’s all about balance!)

Stay mindful, move your body, and nourish yourself with food, family, friends, and fun times that make you feel good!

Until next time,
