7 Summer Running Tips for Warm Weather
Are you a new runner worried about keeping your healthy habit going throughout the summer heat? Here are seven helpful summer running tips for warm weather!

Hello and welcome to Ironwild Fitness! I’m Chantal – a mom, personal trainer, nutrition coach, and the owner of this site. It’s nice to “meet” you! 🙂
Let’s be real – summer running can be a little tough. Between the heat, the sweat, and that blazing sun, it’s easy to feel like skipping your workout altogether. But don’t worry, you don’t have to give up your runs just because it’s hot out!
With a few smart tweaks, you can still crush your goals and feel amazing doing it. Whether you’re training for a race or just trying to stay active, these summer running tips will help you stay cool, safe, and strong all season long.
Let’s dive in!

7 Summer Running Tips for Warm Weather
1. Run Early (or Late) to Beat the Heat
The hottest part of the day is usually between 12 and 4 PM, making that window the worst time to be pounding pavement. If you can, try to squeeze in your runs early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is low and the air is cooler.
Not a morning person? Even an evening run or jog can feel way more comfortable and refreshing than that 2 PM scorcher.

2. Dress Light and Right
Summer is the time to ditch the black leggings and reach for those light-colored, breathable pieces. Moisture-wicking fabrics (like Dri-fit or other tech gear) are your best friend because they help pull sweat away from your body and keep you feeling cooler.
Bonus tip: Don’t forget a hat or visor to shield your face, and lightweight sunglasses if you’re running during daylight hours.
3. Hydration Is Everything
You need to drink more water in the summer regardless of when and where you do your workouts. Aim to hydrate consistently throughout the day, not just right before or after your run.
For longer runs, consider carrying water with you in a hydration pack or stashing a bottle on your route. And if you’re running for more than an hour, a little electrolyte boost (like a sports drink or electrolyte tablet) can help you avoid fatigue and cramping. 4. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen
Even on cloudy days, UV rays can sneak through and damage your skin. A sweat-proof, broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) is a must before every run.
Go for a lightweight, non-greasy formula made for sport (I like this mineral sunscreen) so it won’t drip into your eyes when you sweat. And don’t forget spots like your ears, shoulders, and the back of your neck!
5. Adjust Your Pace and Expectations
Summer heat can slow you down, and that’s totally normal. Don’t stress about hitting your usual pace or distance, because your body is working harder in the heat. Focus on effort, not numbers.
It’s okay to slow your roll, take walking breaks, or cut a run short if you’re feeling overheated. Just be proud of the fact that you’re still out there moving!

6. Plan Shady or Breezy Routes
If you can, map out routes that offer a little relief from the sun. Think tree-lined paths, parks, or waterfront trails. A little shade or breeze can make a huge difference.
Bonus: running near water often feels cooler thanks to the breeze and humidity, and it’s way more scenic too!
7. Cool Down the Smart Way
Don’t just finish your run and call it good. Cooling down properly helps your body recover and avoid heat exhaustion. Walk for a few minutes, stretch in the shade, and drink some water or electrolytes. A quick cool shower can also lower your core temperature and leave you feeling refreshed instead of drained.
That’s it! Now you have plenty of summer running tips to help you stick to it in warm weather. ☺️
Final Thoughts on These Summer Running Tips
Summer running can be an amazing way to enjoy the outdoors and stay active, but you need to be smart about it. With a few simple adjustments, you can keep your runs safe, comfortable, and even fun despite the heat. Remember to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and don’t be afraid to slow down or switch things up when needed. Happy running!
