How To Prioritize Fitness When You Have Kids
Struggling to exercise as a busy mom? I’ve been there! Here are ten practical tips on how to prioritize fitness when you have kids.

Hello and welcome to Ironwild Fitness! I’m Chantal. I’m a mom, certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and the owner of this little corner of the internet. It’s nice to “meet” you! 🙂
Trying to prioritize fitness when you have kids can feel nearly impossible. Between diaper changes, school drop-offs, late nights, and just trying to keep everyone alive, squeezing in a workout might be the last thing on your mind.
I know how difficult it can be to stay healthy and focus on your health when you’re busy raising babies and young children. (Trust me, it’s how I got into fitness.)
But you deserve to feel strong, energized, and like yourself again. This isn’t about chasing perfection or bouncing back, it’s about taking care of you so you can show up as your best self for your family.
So in today’s article, we’re going to talk about some realistic, mom-life-friendly ways to fit fitness into your busy days. Let’s jump in!

How To Prioritize Fitness When You Have Kids
1. Make It a Family Affair
If solo workouts are hard to come by, bring the kids along for the ride! Go for walks, dance around the living room, and do yoga while they climb on you. Not only are you getting movement in, but you’re also setting an amazing example for your kiddos. Yes, you will just have to get used to being interrupted – but something is better than nothing!

2. Schedule It Like an Appointment
You wouldn’t skip a doctor’s appointment, right? Try treating your workouts the same way. Whether it’s a 20-minute session before the kids wake up or a walk after dinner, put it in your calendar and guard that time. It doesn’t have to be long – it just has to be consistent!

3. Wake Up Before the Chaos
Okay, I know, this one’s tough if you’re not a morning person or if your kids are up at the crack of dawn. (If you have a baby, save this one for when that sweetie is sleeping through the night.) But even just 15 minutes of movement before the day starts can help you feel more energized and accomplished. Plus, no one’s asking for snacks at 5:30 in the morning (hopefully).

4. Keep It Short & Sweet
You don’t need an hour-long gym session to make progress. Try a 10- to 20-minute home workout and you’ll STILL be making progress. Think circuit training, bodyweight exercises, or even a quick YouTube video. Small bursts of movement add up and are way easier to stick with in the long run.
5. Involve Your Support System
If you have a partner, friend, or family member nearby, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Let them take over kid duty for 30 minutes while you move your body. You deserve that time, and asking for support isn’t selfish; it’s smart. I know it can be hard to ask for help, but trust me when I say that it can backfire if you don’t take care of yourself!

6. Use Nap Time or Screen Time Strategically
Nap time is golden. If your kids still nap, sneak in a quick workout before diving into chores or scrolling on your phone. And if screen time is part of your day, use that guilt-free window to do something good for your body. There’s absolutely no shame in it if it means Mama will be happier, healthier, and more energetic the rest of the day. The dishes and laundry can wait!
7. Lower the Bar (In a Good Way!)
Fitness doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. If you’re tired, stressed, or short on time, give yourself grace. A 5-minute stretch session counts. A walk around the block counts. Movement is movement, and perfection is overrated. Once you’re a mom, you have to get used to interruptions and plans changing. So don’t come into each workout with big expectations.
8. Find Something You Enjoy
If you dread your workouts, it’s going to be hard to stick with them. So ditch the pressure to do what everyone else is doing and try different things until you find something fun. Try dancing, Pilates, hiking, martial arts, lifting, or anything that sounds fun to you. If you look forward to it, you’ll make time for it.

9. Get the Kids Involved in “Helping”
Little ones love to be your “coach.” Give them a role like counting your reps, holding a timer, and handing you water. It keeps them engaged and lets you move without constantly being interrupted. (Well, less interrupted at least).
When my kids were little, I invested in 2 lb dumbbells so that they could “exercise” alongside me. It was never perfect, but it sure helped!
10. Give Yourself Credit
Some days will be messy. Some workouts will be interrupted five times. But showing up for yourself, even imperfectly, is powerful. As I’ve learned all too well, exercise is not just about your body. It’s also about your mental and emotional state, and it can have a massive impact on your self-esteem. Celebrate those small wins, and remember: you’re doing an amazing job.

Final Thoughts on How To Prioritize Fitness When You Have Kids
At the end of the day, prioritizing fitness as a mom isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being intentional. Life with kids is unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean your goals have to be put on hold forever.
Start small, stay flexible, and remember that something is always better than nothing. You’re not just doing this for your physical health, you’re doing it for your sanity, your energy, and your overall well-being. When you protect that, you’ll be better equipped to take care of your family in the long run.
You’ve got this, mama!
Until next time,
