Being a stay at home mom can be one of the most rewarding and challenging roles that anyone can take on.

I know this as a homemaker of nearly ten years.

My journey has been full of ups and downs, and though it has been great overall, one common theme for me has been purpose.

(Or lack thereof.)

For some of us, it is REALLY hard to feel fulfilled as a stay at home mom.

So, I’ll be the first to admit that finding purpose as a stay at home mom has been a real struggle for me.

I was raised by a career woman, and that influence has made it really hard for me to feel the fulfillment I hoped to have as a mother.

I really thought that I’d be a career woman with a ton of money, friends, and shiny things. (Lol!)

Learning that life doesn’t always go the way you think it should is one of those difficult things we all go through.

For me, not having a traditional career was something I had to accept.

(And honestly, I have to continuously accept it because I’m still at home after all of these years!)

But the good news is that there are ways to help yourself feel like you have a purpose and give you fulfillment as a homemaker.

It’s not always easy, but it can be done.

Finding Purpose As A Stay at Home Mom

First up, I should tell you something really important that I discovered after a few years of being a homemaker.

This is something that I heard other, older moms talk about somewhere along the way but didn’t fully appreciate until after I had been a mom for quite some time.

Here’s the thing – your time as a stay-at-home mom is just ONE short season of your life.

If you really think about your whole life in its entirety, you’ll likely only be a homemaker for a small part of it.

That is, one season.

If you were to live for eighty years, and you were a stay at home mom for ten of those years, you would have spent 1/8th of your life in that role.

If you were to be a stay at home parent for five years (let’s say you have one child and are waiting for them to go to kindergarten before going back to work), then your time as a homemaker would be about 1/16th of your life.

Thinking of your life in seasons, your time as a homemaker is surely a significant portion of your life, but it’s certainly not the majority of your life.

We tend to forget that our children will only be babies and toddlers who need us for a very short period of time.

Most kids will go off to kindergarten at age five and it will open up a world of possibilities for us moms.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ll be on my deathbed regretting how much extra time I spent with my children.

On the flip side, if I spent a ton of my life sacrificing precious time with my kids because I was chasing a career, I might regret that.

And my kids might resent me for it, too.

So I think of my time as a homemaker as a season of life that should be embraced.

This thinking totally transformed my perspective as a stay-at-home parent.

While I have been a stay-at-home mom for nearly ten years now, my youngest is now officially in kindergarten and my world has totally transformed.

It’s as though I suddenly woke up from the haze that is early motherhood and began a whole new life.

I’ve used my time to go back to school to finish my Bachelor’s degree, improve my health, and focus more time and energy on my business.

I’m finally able to go to the dentist, doctor, and gym by myself if I want to.


It’s magical, really.

The light at the end of the tunnel may seem dim to you now, but you’re inching ever-so-close to it each day.

You have to remember that if you want to fully embrace your role as a homemaker and mother.

If you have the mentality that you’ll always be bored, lonely, and empty inside as a homemaker, your life will feel all doom and gloom and you will never feel happy.

The point is that part of what influences your fulfillment and sense of purpose as a stay-at-home mom is your mentality.

If you think of your time as a homemaker as dreadful and boring, it will definitely feel that way.

This has been an ongoing struggle for me, and I fully understand that it’s not always easy to stay positive when you’re bored and isolated for such long periods of time.

Trust me – I have had countless days of total torment out of sheer boredom.

But over time, I have learned how to respond to those emotions with healthier choices.

The truth is that it’s a lot of work to stay positive as a homemaker, but with enough practice, it gets easier and easier.

It’s like I always tell my husband – it is easy to underestimate the amount of dedication, creativity, and discipline that it takes to stay sane as a stay-at-home parent.

It really is hard work to make sure that you’re positive, productive, and purposeful in your work.

It requires dedication and resilience, and it means finding ways to keep motivated day after day.

One important part of being a successful stay-at-home mom is discovering your purpose in this life season – something that will give you direction and help you make decisions about how to spend your time.

But I know that it’s much easier said than done to do that.

1. Get organized.

One key element of being a successful stay-at-home mom is setting up an effective organizational system that works for you and your family.

I struggled with this a BUNCH as a new mom, as I was never really taught how to manage a household or even many basic chores.

In fact, our household was a total disaster, which actually stressed me out a ton, making me feel really inadequate as a homemaker.

These days, however, I’m quite the pro and run a tight ship when it comes to the organization and cleanliness of my home.

This keeps me feeling accomplished and proud of how I have spent my time each day.

It’s really all about mindset and positivity. To stay positive psychologically speaking, we must have these small wins.

It’s all in your habits and ability to take action and get things done.

Just keep in mind that building these habits and learning how to keep things organized takes time. Start small and build on those little habits over time.

If you learn how to prioritize tasks around the house, plan meals ahead of time, and create structure, everyone eventually knows what needs to get done during the day.

Keep in mind that you won’t just feel pride for getting things done, you’ll also be modeling healthy behavior for your kids.

Being idle on the regular is NOT a good look and sends the wrong message.

Pro Tip: I learned how to prioritize my time by writing down a to-do list that includes ONLY the top three things that I needed to get done that day. Don’t overwhelm yourself with a mile-long list of things to do each day.

2. Connect with other moms.

Having relationships with other mothers who understand what you’re going through can help provide motivation and insight into different parenting strategies or just be someone to talk about life with on those tough days.

Consider joining local groups or forming an online network to connect with other moms in similar situations.

You can also just strike up conversations with other moms at church, school pickup, and other community events.

I know, it’s easier said than done, and it’s uncomfortable for some.

(It was always an issue for me, I don’t like cliques!)

But trust me, even if you find a mom friend who is very different from you, you will be able to find common ground.

Virtually all moms struggle with something, and being able to relate to someone else is incredibly important when you’re a stay-at-home parent.

3. Invest in yourself.

Taking care of yourself is essential when it comes to being able to take care of others!

Schedule regular self-care activities like exercise classes, reading books, taking baths, or whatever else helps you feel refreshed and energized throughout the day – even if it’s just spending 10 minutes meditating each morning!

You can also take the time to learn a new skill, big or small.

I learned things like how to make sourdough bread, but I also invested in my skillsets and knowledge during my time at home.

When I became a stay at home mom in 2014 and was desperate to find a way to contribute to my family financially, I researched and tested the many ways to do that.

Long story short, I taught myself how to blog. I used these new skills to create this very blog, which brings in a steady income each month.

I also used these skills to get hired as an assistant web developer and writer for a local firm.

That gave me a little extra part-time work that I could do from home and potentially use in my next season in life.

Just because you’re a stay at home mom doesn’t mean you can’t invest in yourself in the form of learning!

4. Find volunteer opportunities in your community or join causes that matter to you.

Being a part of something bigger than yourself is incredibly rewarding and provides you with a way to connect with others.


It’s truly an underrated way to keep your head above water as a stay at home parent.

Now, if you’re like me, it’s not wise to over-commit, so start small with something like a one-day commitment before jumping into anything long-term.

Being a mom is super exhausting no matter what, so be sure that you’re fully available mentally, physically, and emotionally before committing to any volunteer work that’s long-term.

Ideas on volunteer work you can do as a stay-at-home mom:

  • Assistant coach for your child’s sports team
  • Nursery assistant at church
  • Reading volunteer at your child’s school
  • Volunteer to help a new mom with meals or childcare
  • Volunteer fundraising efforts for a local organization
  • Fun-run volunteer
  • Food or toy drive involvement
  • Get on the school’s PTA
  • The possibilities are endless!

5. Use this time for all of the soul-searching your heart desires.

Let this be a reminder that once you go “back into the world” and have a full-time job again, your life will be moving so fast that you won’t have nearly as much time for yourself.

I recommend reading personal finance books, self-help books, parenting books, and any book that will help you form healthy habits.

I also recommend taking any classes you can and saying yes to any opportunities that come your way.

This could mean simple social events or it could be side jobs, church activities, travel, or just about anything else.

Each and every one of those is an opportunity to learn something new about yourself and discover what you want for your future.

It’s also a chance to make connections and network, which may pay off later down the road.

Just trust me here – it may not feel like it, but all of this time and effort is going to pay off one day soon.

6. Pray for contentment.

If you’re not religious, you can still do this on some level via meditation or mindset work.

At the end of the day, it’s all about your perspective and attitude toward the situation you’re in.

I used to spend so much time praying to be okay and happy with my situation.

I felt like I would never be able to be happy and fulfilled as a mom.

Now, I can hardly imagine being anything else. My perspective is different, and that affects my daily actions and attitudes.

Finding purpose and learning how to feel fulfilled as a stay-at-home mom is an important task for many mothers.

It can be difficult to find the balance between feeling fulfilled and tending to the everyday needs of your family.

However, by taking steps to prioritize yourself, nurture relationships with other moms, and appreciate all that you do every day, it is possible to find that sense of purpose.

Being a stay-at-home mom is an incredibly rewarding job and with some effort, it can provide a meaningful experience and lasting joy in life.
