Hi there! I’m Chantal. I’m a mom, certified personal trainer, and nutrition coach.

In the process of becoming a new mom, I completely lost my way with health and fitness. I struggled not only to lose weight, but I also struggled with my mental health, self-esteem, and knowing how to treat my “new” body.

Tired of feeling uncomfortable in my own skin, I decided to make a big commitment to my health by starting a blog and becoming a personal trainer. This blog has served as my own personal fitness journal ever since.

Now, I’m on a mission to share everything I’ve learned about health and fitness with other women. In today’s article, we’re discussing more ways to stay healthy in the winter, specifically by embracing cold-weather hobbies.

Winter often brings a slower pace, shorter days, and a whole new set of challenges when it comes to staying healthy. It can be really hard this time of year!

Here, we’re focused on realistic fitness and nutrition for women who want to feel strong, energized, and confident without extreme plans or all-or-nothing thinking. It’s about building healthy habits that fit into real life, no matter the season.

Instead of waiting for spring to “start fresh,” winter is a great time to try something new. It’s the perfect season to focus on habits that support both your body and your mind.

From cozy at-home movement to nourishing comfort foods and simple self-care routines, healthy winter hobbies help you stay consistent and beat the winter slump.

Today I’m sharing 10 healthy winter hobbies to try this year that feel doable, enjoyable, and supportive of your overall wellness. Let’s get to it!

10 Healthy Winter Hobbies to Try This Year

1. At-Home Workouts

Winter is the perfect excuse to embrace at-home workouts. Whether it’s strength training in your living room, Pilates on a yoga mat, or a quick HIIT session during nap time, staying active doesn’t require leaving the house.

Cozy workouts remove so many barriers – no commute, no cold weather, and no pressure. Light a candle, throw on a playlist, and move your body in a way that feels good.

2. Start a Winter Walking Routine

Winter Walk

Fresh air is still important, even in winter. Bundling up and heading out for daily walks can boost your mood, support heart health, and help shake off that winter sluggishness.

Walking is low-impact and easy to stick with, making it a great hobby if you’re easing back into movement. Bonus points if you invite a friend or listen to a favorite podcast while you walk.

3. Practice Yoga or Stretching

Cold weather can make our bodies feel stiff and tight, which is why winter is a great time to explore yoga or daily stretching. Even 10–15 minutes a day can improve flexibility, reduce stress, and support recovery from other workouts.

It’s also a great way to slow down during a season that naturally invites more rest and reflection. If you’re new to yoga, check out this guide to some quick morning yoga poses.

4. Learn to Cook Healthy Comfort Foods

Chicken Soup

Winter is comfort food season, but that doesn’t mean everything has to be heavy. Trying new healthy recipes like soups, stews, slow-cooker meals, or high-protein baked goods can be both fun and nourishing. (I love making this easy chicken & wild rice soup for seasonal nourishment.)

Cooking at home more often helps support your nutrition goals and turns meal prep into a creative, calming hobby instead of a chore. Keep at it!

5. Take Up Strength Training

Strength training is one of the best things you can do for your body year-round, and winter is a great time to build consistency. Whether you use dumbbells, resistance bands, or just your bodyweight, indoor strength workouts help maintain muscle, boost metabolism, and improve confidence.

Plus, staying strong makes everyday life easier – especially when you’re juggling kids, work, and everything else. Give my upper-body dumbbell workout a try if you’re new to weight lifting.

6. Try Journaling

Journaling is a healthy winter hobby

Mental health matters just as much as physical health, especially during the darker winter months. Journaling, gratitude lists, or simple mindfulness practices can help reduce stress and keep your mindset in a healthy place.

This hobby doesn’t take much time, but it can have a big impact on your emotional well-being and motivation. If you don’t know where to start, check out these journaling prompts to help build self-esteem.

7. Join a Virtual Fitness Challenge or Program

Winter can feel isolating, so finding community – even online – can be incredibly motivating.

Joining a virtual fitness challenge, workout program, or accountability group gives you structure and support when motivation dips. It also helps you stay connected and reminds you that you’re not alone in your health journey.

8. Try Winter-Friendly Outdoor Activities

winter hike

If you enjoy being outside, winter opens the door to different types of movement like snowshoeing, sledding with the kids, ice skating, or hiking in cooler temps.

These activities don’t feel like “exercise,” but they still get your heart rate up and keep you active. Plus, being outdoors can do wonders for your mood during the winter months.

9. Focus on Better Sleep Habits

Winter is a great time to treat sleep like the healthy hobby it truly is. Longer nights make it easier to prioritize rest, which supports hormone balance, energy levels, and workout recovery.

Creating a relaxing nighttime routine, like stretching, reading, or limiting screens, can make a huge difference in how you feel day to day. If you aren’t getting a restful night’s sleep regularly, check out these tips to get better sleep.

10. Set Gentle Health Goals for Yourself

Instead of going all-in with intense resolutions, winter is the perfect season to set gentle, realistic health goals. (Being realistic makes everything better, trust me!)

This might look like moving your body three times a week, drinking more water, or focusing on protein at meals. Treating your health like a long-term lifestyle, not a quick fix, helps build habits that actually stick.
