Hello and welcome to Ironwild Fitness! I’m Chantal. I’m a mom, certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and the owner of this little corner of the internet. It’s nice to “meet” you! 🙂

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s the perfect time to start building healthy habits that can transform your life. If you’re just now getting started working on your health this year, know that it is absolutely NOT too late. There’s no better time than now!

Whether you’re just beginning your fitness journey or looking to take your wellness routine to the next level, these habits are simple, effective, and designed to fit seamlessly into your busy schedule.

My suggestion is to make sure that you choose things that are realistic to your current lifestyle rather than trying to overhaul your whole life completely. Pick just 2 or 3 of these healthy habits to start in February, then work to add a few more over time! 🙂

Okay – let’s dive in!

Think it's too late to start building healthy habits this year? Think again! Here are 11 healthy habits to start in February.

11 Healthy Habits to Start in February

1. Hydration Challenge

Raise your hand if you know you should be drinking more water! Staying hydrated is essential for energy, focus, and overall health. Start your day with a tall glass of water and aim for at least 8 glasses daily. To make it fun, add a splash of lemon, cucumber slices, or even some berries for natural flavor.

2. Meal Prepping Made Easy

Meal prep might sound intimidating, but it’s a game-changer for busy women. Dedicate a couple of hours on Sunday to prepping healthy meals and snacks for the week. Focus on lean proteins, fresh veggies, and whole grains to keep you fueled and ready for whatever life throws your way.

Even if you only meal prep your snacks, you’ll be empowered to make better food choices throughout the week. If you need a little inspiration, check out these high-protein meal prep recipes to try!

3. Daily Walks or Movement

Whether it’s a brisk walk around the neighborhood, a quick yoga session, or dancing in your kitchen, moving your body daily can do wonders for your mood and energy. Aim for 20-30 minutes of activity that you enjoy—consistency matters more than intensity!

I highly recommend aiming to reach that magical 10,000 steps a day – no matter how you get there. I know that it’s cold out there this time of year, but you can still get your steps in with a little walk here and there. Here’s how I get 10,000 steps a day without any running or extra workouts.

4. Reduce Added Sugars

Cutting back on processed sugars can improve your energy levels, mood, and even your skin. (Also, sugars that don’t get used for energy right away eventually get stored as fat.) Swap sugary snacks for natural alternatives like fresh fruit, dark chocolate, or a handful of nuts. Start small and notice how much better you feel.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Good sleep is the foundation of a healthy life, but it’s often the first thing busy women sacrifice. Many people don’t know this, but if you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re likely creating a hormonal nightmare for your body, which can actually cause you to retain weight and make it harder for you to be successful on your health journey.

So this month, why not create a calming bedtime routine to help you get better sleep? Limit screen time before bed and aim for 7-8 hours of quality rest each night. Trust me—you’ll wake up ready to conquer the day.

6. Start Keeping a Gratitude Journal

I am ALL about focusing on your mindset and emotional well-being as part of your fitness journey. A few minutes of gratitude journaling can shift your mindset and improve your mental fortitude.

Each day, jot down three things you’re thankful for. It could be as simple as a warm cup of coffee or a kind word from a friend. Over time, this practice can help you see the silver linings in everyday life.

7. Eat More Greens

Greens are nutritional powerhouses (and super underrated for balancing hormones), and adding them to your meals is easier than you think. Toss some spinach into your morning smoothie, add a handful of broccoli to your pasta, or swap your dinnertime grains for a salad.

I learned the hard way that not getting enough vegetables in your diet can throw your hormones way off (it created estrogen dominance for me), stress out your liver, and actually keep you from losing weight because they have fiber, vitamins, and other compounds that detox the body. So – get those veggies in!

8. Practice Mindful Eating

I wholeheartedly believe that self-awareness is a huge part of fitness and nutrition. How often do you eat while scrolling your phone or watching TV?

Mindful eating is all about focusing on your food—its flavors, textures, and how it makes you feel. By slowing down, you’ll enjoy your meals more and naturally eat less because you’ll be more in tune with your hunger cues and your body’s reaction to specific foods.

9. Pencil in Some Self-Care

Let’s be real: women often put themselves last (especially if you’re a mom). This February, make self-care a priority. Schedule 15-30 minutes a day for something that brings you joy, whether it’s a relaxing bath, reading a good book, or simply sitting in silence. It doesn’t have to be a full spa day or anything complicated…but you deserve it!

10. Strength Training Three Times a Week

Strength training isn’t just for bodybuilders—it’s for women who want to feel strong and confident. (Or if you’re like me, it’s also for people who don’t want to have back pain. Lol.)

Start with simple bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups, or use light weights. Aim for three sessions a week to build muscle and boost your metabolism. (They don’t have to be long to be effective.) Here is a solid dumbbell upper body workout that’s great for beginners.

11. Limit Screen Time

Screens can suck up your time and mental or emotional energy before you realize it. Set boundaries for personal and family screen time. Use that extra time to connect with loved ones, pursue hobbies, or simply unwind. I promise that this will help you lower your stress levels and attention span, which will ultimately free up some mental space for you to focus on what matters.

Final Thoughts on These Healthy Habits to Start in February

Even though it’s already February, it’s not too late to start working on healthy habits. (You still have 10+ months left in the year!) Just remember, the key to building healthy habits is starting small and staying consistent.

Pick one or two habits to focus on in February, and once they become second nature, add more. By the end of the month, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come. Here’s to becoming a healthier, happier you!

Until next time,

Chantal from Ironwild Fitness
