5 Easy Morning Stretches to Help You Wake Up

1. Cat-Cow Stretch

Cat-Cow Stretch

The Cat-Cow stretch is a gentle way to wake up your spine and get some circulation flowing throughout your body. It’s a relaxing way to loosen up any stiffness that might have built up overnight.

  1. Start on your hands and knees with your wrists aligned under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
  2. Take a deep breath and arch your back, letting your belly drop toward the mat (Cow Pose). Lift your head and tailbone toward the ceiling.
  3. As you exhale, round your back and tuck your chin to your chest, pulling your belly button in (Cat Pose).
  4. Repeat this motion slowly for 5-10 breaths, moving with each inhale and exhale.

2. Standing Forward Fold

standing forward bend

Standing Forward Fold is a calming stretch that helps release tension in your hamstrings, lower back, and shoulders. It also promotes blood flow to your brain, which can help you feel more awake.

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent.
  2. Take a deep breath in, then exhale as you hinge at your hips, letting your upper body fold forward.
  3. Let your arms hang toward the floor, and try to relax your head and neck. You can hold opposite elbows if that feels good.
  4. Hold this position for 15-30 seconds, taking slow, deep breaths. To come up, engage your core and slowly roll back to a standing position.

3. Child’s Pose

Child's Pose

This stretch is perfect for relieving tension in your back and shoulders, while also giving you a moment of calm. Child’s Pose can feel comforting, especially if you’ve woken up with a stiff neck or back.

  1. Start on your knees, sitting back on your heels.
  2. Reach your arms forward and lower your torso down toward the floor, letting your forehead rest on the mat or bed.
  3. Breathe deeply, feeling the stretch along your back and shoulders.
  4. Hold for 30 seconds, or longer if you like.

4. Seated Side Stretch

Seated Side stretch

A seated side stretch is an easy way to open up your sides and take a few deeper breaths, which is great for getting more oxygen to your muscles and brain in the morning.

  1. Sit comfortably with your legs crossed (or however you feel stable).
  2. Place one hand on the floor next to you for support, and raise your other arm overhead, stretching it over to the side.
  3. Hold for a few breaths, feeling the stretch along your side.
  4. Switch sides and repeat, holding each side for 15-30 seconds.

5. Neck Stretches

Neck stretch

Many of us hold a lot of tension in our neck and shoulders, and a gentle stretch can help you feel less tight. Neck stretches are a great, simple way to loosen up before you start the day.

  1. Start by sitting or standing up straight.
  2. Slowly tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder, feeling the stretch along the left side of your neck.
  3. Hold for a few breaths, then switch sides.
  4. You can also add a gentle chin tuck (bringing your chin toward your chest) to release tension at the back of your neck.
