If you’re a mom who has ever looked in the mirror and wondered, “How did I get here?” – you’re not alone.

Between pregnancy, busy schedules, sleepless nights, work, kids, and constantly putting everyone else first, it’s easy for your own health to move to the bottom of the list.

It’s a very common issue, as many moms start a weight loss journey feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unsure where to even begin.

That’s exactly why I created Ironwild Fitness – to help moms take food and fitness into their own hands.

I’m Chantal, a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Nutrition Coach with a passion for helping women build healthier, stronger lives through realistic fitness and nutrition habits.

I struggled with postpartum weight loss for YEARS before I finally “figured it out.” (Because let me tell you – nutrition and exercise are NOT the same after you have a child!)

Ironwild Fitness

I was tired, anxious, overweight, and I suffered from chronic back pain and depression from not only lack of sleep, but lack of confidence and strength.

But after learning and testing various strategies over the course of many years, I slowly but surely began to feel like myself again. (And I’ve shared everything I’ve learned since!)

My approach to weight loss isn’t about extreme diets, endless cardio, or chasing perfection. (We’ve all tried that, and it just doesn’t work, does it?)

It’s about creating sustainable changes that fit into real life – because moms don’t need another impossible plan to follow. They need tools, support, and a strategy that works with their lifestyle. Heaven knows, if it’s not sustainable and realistic, it’s not gonna work!

This complete beginner weight loss guide for moms is designed to walk you through the foundations of healthy weight loss.

From understanding nutrition and building better habits to creating a workout routine you can actually stick with, we’re going to cover it all.

Whether you’re just starting out, getting back into fitness after having kids, or feeling stuck after trying everything else, you’ll find practical steps to help you feel stronger, more confident, and more like yourself again.

Let’s get started!

Understanding Weight Loss: The Foundation

Before we talk about workouts and meal plans, it’s important to understand what actually causes weight loss.

At its most basic level, weight loss happens when your body uses more energy than it takes in over time. This is called a calorie deficit.

However, sustainable weight loss is much more complicated than simply “eat less and exercise more.” Especially for women.

Complete Beginner Weight Loss Guide for Moms

Your hunger levels, stress, sleep, hormones, muscle mass, environment, and daily habits all influence your ability to stay consistent.

This is why many quick-fix diets fail, and no one can stick to them for more than a few weeks. Many of them focus only on restriction without teaching you how to build a healthier lifestyle overall. (If you’re still eating only 1,200 calories per day, PLEASE keep reading!)

A successful weight loss journey should help you:

  • Increase energy
  • Build strength
  • Improve your relationship with food
  • Support your hormones
  • Feel confident in your body
  • Create habits your family can benefit from, too

The goal isn’t just losing weight…the goal is becoming a healthier version of yourself. But not just for a few months, but forever. And constant restriction is not IT.

Nutrition: Fueling Your Body for Fat Loss

This would be the “complete beginner weight loss guide for moms” without talking about nutrition!

Complete Beginner Weight Loss Guide for Moms Nutrition Basics

Nutrition is one of the biggest pieces of the weight loss puzzle, but it’s also where many moms feel the most confused. Especially because most of us grew up thinking we needed specialty diets and products to make things happen.

The thing is, you don’t need a complicated meal plan or a list of “good” and “bad” foods. You need to understand how to build meals that keep you satisfied and support your goals. But what does that mean?

Focus on Protein First

Protein is one of the most important nutrients for weight loss because it helps with satiety, muscle maintenance, and recovery.

Most women chronically undereat protein, though, so that’s where we’re going to start. If you’re serious about losing weight, increasing your protein should become one of your top priorities.

When you increase your protein intake, you may find yourself naturally eating less because protein helps keep hunger under control. (It truly keeps you feeling fuller longer, so it helps you eat less over time.)

Protein also becomes even more important as you add strength training because your body needs amino acids to repair and build muscle.

You probably already know that protein is important for building and maintaining muscle, but its benefits go far beyond strength training.

Protein is one of the most important nutrients your body needs to function properly. It helps build and repair tissues, supports your immune system, plays a role in hormone production, and helps your body carry out thousands of daily processes.

Protein is made up of smaller compounds called amino acids. Think of amino acids as the “building blocks” your body uses to create and repair muscle, produce enzymes, make hormones, and support overall health.

When it comes to weight loss, protein is especially helpful because it can make it easier to feel satisfied and stay consistent with your goals.

Veggie-Packed Breakfast

Protein Keeps You Fuller for Longer?

Yes, and here’s why! Protein contains 4 calories per gram, compared to 9 calories per gram in fat. (Carbohydrates also contain 4 calories per gram.)

This means protein gives you more volume and satisfaction for fewer calories compared to higher-fat foods.

But the real advantage is how your body processes it.

Protein has a higher thermic effect of food, meaning your body uses more energy to digest and metabolize protein than it does with carbohydrates or fats.

In simple terms, your body burns more calories breaking down protein.

But protein also takes longer to digest, which can help you feel full for longer periods of time. This can make it easier to manage cravings, reduce mindless snacking, and maintain a calorie deficit without feeling constantly hungry.

Pretty cool, right?

For busy moms trying to lose weight, protein is one of the easiest ways to support your metabolism, protect muscle, and make healthy eating feel more manageable.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

Your ideal protein intake depends on several factors, including your body size, activity level, goals, and current health.

There is no single perfect number for everyone, but a helpful starting point for active women or those working toward weight loss is:

0.8–1.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day

Here’s an example:

A woman who weighs 180 pounds could calculate her protein goal like this:

180 lbs × 0.8 grams = 144 grams of protein per day

To calculate how many calories come from protein:

144 grams × 4 calories = 576 calories from protein

Remember, this is simply a starting point. Your needs may change based on your workouts, lifestyle, and goals.

If tracking macros feels overwhelming, start with something simpler:

Aim to include a quality protein source at every meal. Aim for at least 25 grams of protein each time, and I can almost bet you’ll already be eating more protein than you were before.

Simple protein sources include:

  • Eggs & egg whites
  • Greek yogurt
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Fish
  • Lean beef
  • Cottage cheese
  • Tofu
  • Beans
  • Protein smoothies

A simple goal for many women is to include protein at every meal.

Instead of something like toast + coffee, try eggs with whole-grain toast and fruit. Or, instead of a small salad at lunch, try chicken salad with vegetables, avocado, and a protein-rich dressing.

Small changes add up!

Building Balanced Meals

Now, protein isn’t the only piece of the puzzle. You do need micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), as well as fiber, to really improve your health. But I want to make an important point before we keep going: a sustainable meal doesn’t need to be perfect. Just think about creating a plate with:

  • Protein
  • Fiber-rich carbohydrates
  • Healthy fats
  • Fruits and vegetables

On that note, I want to make a note that carbohydrates are not the enemy. However, there are different types of carbs, and that matters. More on that soon.

Your body uses carbohydrates for energy, especially if you’re active, walking, lifting weights, or chasing kids around all day. You NEED carbs if you want the energy to work out, chase kiddos, breastfeed, and so much more.

The goal is to choose mostly nutrient-dense carbohydrates like:

  • Potatoes
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Fruit
  • Whole grains
  • Beans

These carbs are “complex” carbs, meaning they have not been stripped of their natural fibers, and they are MUCH healthier for you overall. If you want to take a deep dive into the world of carbs, check out my comprehensive guide to carbohydrates. I promise you’ll learn a lot!

But what about fats? First of all, not all fats are bad, so go ahead and get that out of your head.

There are actually four different types of fats, and you’ll just want to try to focus on the “healthy” ones from here on out. (Click here to read my guide to the different types of fats.)

Healthy fats are important for satisfaction (“satiety”) and hormone health. Your brain, skin, and hair also need healthy fats. Honestly, I could go down quite the rabbit hole about how you need healthy fat for optimal health, but that might not be what you need right now.

Anyhow, here are some examples of sources of healthy fats:

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Olive oil
  • Avocado
  • Coconut oil
  • Fatty fish like salmon

So, let’s sum it all up. If you’re ready to start focusing on your nutrition, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Increase your protein intake
  2. Cut back on simple carbs (like white bread and pastries) and focus on complex carbs
  3. Increase your intake of fruit and vegetables for fiber and micronutrients
  4. Cut back on alcohol and excess sugar

That’s it! I could go much further in depth here, but I promise that if you focus on these things, you will begin to see changes.

That Girl Morning Habits

Stop Trying to “Start Over Monday”

Hands down, the biggest issue my clients have in common is this funny little word, “motivation.” But motivation is honestly a fleeting feeling, and as such, you need to focus on building a strong mindset to overcome that roller coaster that motivation can have you riding.

In other words, you need to stop relying on motivation to get things done, or you’ll stay in that same vicious cycle that got you here to begin with.

One of the biggest mindset shifts you can make is learning how to recover quickly.

Here’s what I mean: You need to quit throwing in the towel every time something doesn’t go to plan. A single meal does not ruin your progress. A birthday party does not ruin your progress. And a busy week does not erase everything you’ve done. This goes for food and exercise.

You cannot just quit every time something goes wrong. You just need to learn how to get back on track every time – and quickly.

The difference between people who succeed and people who constantly restart is often consistency. Don’t believe that you have to be at 99% all of the time to see progress.

Instead of:

“I messed up, so I’ll start again on Monday.”

Try:

“That meal didn’t match my goals. My next choice matters.”

That’s it! Quit taking your mistakes personally, and just get back to it as soon as you can. Do not be so hard on yourself when you “mess up.” It’s a lesson, not a total failure!

Meal Prep for Busy Moms

So, all of this is great in theory, right? But how do you actually execute it all? Meal prepping is a big part of it. Why? Because healthy eating becomes easier when you remove decision fatigue.

Failure to plan is planning to fail, after all.

Try preparing:

  • Protein options for the week
  • Cut vegetables
  • Cooked grains
  • Easy breakfast options
  • Grab-and-go snacks

If nothing else, please focus on protein and veggies! Hard-boil some eggs, barbecue some chicken, or whip up some healthy chicken salad. Then, wash and cut some veggies for easy snacking. It really is about these little things!

The goal is not eating perfectly; it’s making healthy choices easier.

If you need help with meal prep, I have a ton of resources:

P.S. If you take my course, there are a TON of resources and hacks for healthy eating!

Weight Training: Build the Body You Want to Live In

Strength training is one of the most powerful tools for moms who want sustainable weight loss. I would be completely remiss without mentioning it.

Many women focus only on cardio, but building muscle changes your body in ways the scale cannot measure. And, just in case you need to be told, it will not make you bulky unless you lift SUPER heavy, increase your protein by a TON, and add creatine to your routine for YEARS without ceasing.

Women need to lift weights

Lifting weights will help you build muscle, but muscle helps you:

  • Increase strength
  • Support metabolism
  • Improve confidence
  • Protect joints and bones
  • Perform daily activities more easily
  • Relieve muscle pain due to weakness

You simply need to challenge your muscles consistently to do all of this! So, how do you get started? Let’s jump in!

Beginner Strength Training Tips

If you’re completely new to strength training, I would advise you to start with movements that mimic everyday life. (This is also known as functional training.) Here are a few examples of everyday movement patterns:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Hip hinges
  • Push movements
  • Pull movements
  • Carrying movements

A beginner routine might include:

2–3 strength sessions per week

Each workout:

  • Squat variation
  • Upper body push
  • Upper body pull
  • Core exercise
  • Hip/glute exercise

I know this is a high-level overview, but I want to make sure that you know to try to progress slowly. Over time, focus on adding weight and repetitions while improving your form. It doesn’t have to be extreme, either.

Consistency beats intensity every time!

Sleep: The Missing Piece of Weight Loss

Sleep is often overlooked, especially by moms. It’s a tricky thing, for sure. But the problem is that your sleep quality affects almost every system in your body.

When you don’t sleep enough, your hunger hormones can become disrupted. You may experience stronger cravings, lower energy, and less motivation to move.

Poor sleep can also make workouts feel harder and increase your desire for quick sources of energy like sugary foods. It can also cause high cortisol (the stress hormone), which can make it even harder to lose weight because your body will just think it’s in survival mode at all times.

How to Improve Sleep as a Busy Mom

You may not always control when your kids wake up, but you can improve your sleep habits. (I know you can, it’s just going to require a little bit of intention on your part!)

Try:

  • Keeping a consistent bedtime
  • Limiting screens before bed
  • Creating a relaxing evening routine
  • Getting sunlight early in the day
  • Avoiding caffeine too late
  • Making your bedroom comfortable and dark

Think of sleep as part of your fitness plan, not something extra. Your body recovers while you sleep, so this is going to be CRITICAL moving forward. If you need a little extra help when it comes to sleep, check out these simple ways to get a better night’s sleep.

Walking: The Most Underrated Fat Loss Tool

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise, but you won’t know it until you try it. Luckily, it’s accessible, low-impact, and easy to fit into a busy schedule.

Winter Walk

Why the big deal about walking?

Walking helps:

  • Increase daily calorie burn
  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Reduce stress (cortisol)
  • Support mental health
  • Improve recovery
  • Helps regulate mood and sleep

Unless you’ve gone on a deep dive to learn about hormones as I have, you may not fully understand how powerful walking is. (Until you start doing it regularly, that is.)

You don’t need to hit 20,000 steps a day. Start where you are, and build up to 10,000 steps if you can. Ideally, you’ll hit 10,000 per day at least 5 times per week. Here are some simple ways to work your way up to that.

Add:

  • A 10-minute walk after dinner
  • A morning walk with coffee
  • Walking while the kids play outside
  • Extra steps during errands (park further away!)

Small amounts of movement throughout the day add up, truly, they do! If you’re struggling with working your way up to 10,000 steps per day, no worries. Here is what I think is the easiest way to hit it consistently.

Hormones: Understanding Your Changing Body

I’ve already brought up hormones, but I want to bring them up again because it may very well be the missing piece of your weight loss puzzle. (It was for me.)

Many moms struggle with weight loss because they assume they’re doing everything wrong when their body simply has different needs. Or, on the flip side, moms will do all of the things they think are “right,” but it’s not quite what their hormones need. (Trust me, if you’ve tried everything, you may need to think about honing in on your hormones.)

Hormones influence:

  • Hunger
  • Energy
  • Recovery
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Water retention
  • Your ability to lose weight

Pregnancy, postpartum changes, stress, and lack of sleep can all affect how you feel. But instead of fighting your body, you have to learn to support it.

I learned this the hard way after experiencing low energy, hair loss, strange rashes, painful periods, the inability to lose weight, and mood swings. It turns out that I had estrogen dominance and adrenal fatigue. (You can read more about what I discovered here.)

Prioritize:

  • Enough food
  • Enough protein
  • Strength training
  • Sleep
  • Stress management
  • Cruciferous veggies, which help regulate certain hormones

Your body is not something to punish, it’s something to take care of.

Habits: The Secret to Long-Term Success

The biggest transformations usually don’t come from one huge change. They come from small habits repeated consistently.

Your environment and routines matter.

Start with habits like:

  • Drinking water before coffee
  • Eating protein at breakfast
  • Walking daily
  • Strength training twice a week
  • Going to bed 30 minutes earlier
  • Planning meals before you’re hungry

Make your goals easy to repeat! If you want to dive deeper into habit-building, click here for more inspiration!

The 1% Better Approach

You don’t need a perfect lifestyle overnight. In fact, that mindset is probably going to backfire. (I’m sure you know what I’m talking about!)

Instead of being “all in” or “all out,” focus on improving one small thing at a time. Once you’ve mastered that, you can add another healthy habit in. Just remember that it’s going to take time.

The truth is that a healthier life is built through thousands of small decisions:

Choosing a walk.

Choosing protein.

Choosing rest.

Choosing yourself.

Then you have to repeat that, over and over again.

Final Thoughts On This Complete Beginner Weight Loss Guide for Moms

I hope this complete beginner weight loss guide for moms has shown you that lasting weight loss doesn’t come from finding the perfect diet or spending hours in the gym.

It comes from building a strong foundation through balanced nutrition, quality sleep, regular movement, strength training, healthy habits, and giving your body the support it deserves.

Remember, you don’t have to change everything overnight. In fact, trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle at once is one of the biggest reasons people give up. Instead, focus on making one small improvement at a time.

Every healthy meal, every walk around the block, every strength workout, and every good night’s sleep is a step toward becoming a healthier, stronger version of yourself.

Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Your body has carried you through pregnancy, motherhood, sleepless nights, and countless challenges. It deserves kindness, not punishment. Sustainable weight loss is about creating habits that help you feel energized, confident, and capable for years to come.

If you’re ready to take the next step and want a simple, step-by-step approach to nutrition, I’d love to help. My course, Her Nutrition Revolution, was created specifically for women who are tired of restrictive diets and want to learn how to fuel their bodies with confidence.

Inside, you’ll learn how to build balanced meals, understand macronutrients, develop healthier eating habits, and create a nutrition plan that actually fits your life as a busy mom.

Your health journey doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to begin. And today is a great day to take that first step.

Until next time,

Chantal from Ironwild Fitness
