Peppermint Chocolate Protein Shake Discovery
As I mentioned, I am not only a certified personal trainer but a certified nutrition coach as well!
That pretty much means that health and nutrition are super important to me.
About a year ago, my husband and I had recently sold our house. While searching for a new home, we moved our family of four into my parent’s house. (Yikes!)
The transition was a bit rough, and I struggled with how to downsize our belongings and share a kitchen, including fridge and pantry space.

I decided that it might be helpful or just easier to invest in some meal replacements and protein shakes so that I could be in-and-out of the kitchen with less mess and use up less space in the cabinets.
I found this really delicious peppermint swirl shake from 310 Nutrition and it was so dang good! (They also had mint chocolate but I can’t find it now.)

New & Improved Chocolate Peppermint Protein Shake
However, when we moved, I stopped having the need for meal replacements and just thought it would be better to get plain vanilla and chocolate protein powder.
This would make my protein powders more versatile so that I can switch up my flavors, the fruit & veggies that I add to my shakes, etc.
But with that being said, I still found myself craving that classic mint chocolate combo! (Especially around the holidays!)
I just had to figure out how to get that Thin Mint flavor using my regular chocolate protein powder. (Even if I didn’t have peppermint protein powder anymore).
So after playing around a bit with different ingredients and ratios, this chocolate mint protein shake was born!
Now it’s my go-to mint chocolate protein shake recipe.
Why This Shake Is Perfect For Your Nutritional Goals
If you’re reading this, it’s pretty obvious that you have some pretty serious nutrition goals in mind.
I love this chocolate peppermint protein shake because it is easily adapted to your nutritional needs.
Need to use dairy-free milk? Do it! (Unsweetened almond milk works great.)
Want to add healthy fats? Add a little coconut oil or almond butter!
Need more greens in your diet? A handful of spinach will do the trick!
Want to add a fun sweet treat to your shake?
Top it with cacao nibs, chocolate chips, smashed candy cane bits or with a peppermint stick to really get into the holiday spirit! (You can also sweeten the deal by adding medjool dates to the blender.)
Want this shake to be even thicker?
Add more ice cubes! (And be sure you’re using frozen banana.)
Hopefully you get the idea.
You can play around with some of these simple ingredients as long as you keep that high-protein, chocolatey base in mind.

How Many Grams Of Protein Are In This Protein Shake?
If you follow the recipe exactly, your mint chocolate protein smoothie should yield about 33 grams total.
That assumes that you use regular skim milk and a protein powder yielding 25 grams of protein.
However, this number can easily be modified using the following:
- An extra scoop of protein powder
- A dollop – 1/2 cup of non-fat Greek yogurt
- A spoonful of chocolate peanut butter powder (like PBFit)

Chocolate Mint Protein Shake FAQ
Let’s get to the questions I will inevitably have to answer. Here are some I can imagine you might have right away:
Yes! If you already have a peppermint flavored protein shake, just add the cocoa powder and a drop or two of peppermint extract instead of the full amount.
You can keep your shake in the fridge or freezer in a sealed container for up to a day. However, it’s best to consume this baby within a couple of hours to avoid separation & runny-ness.
If you’re okay with banana or avocado, they are the two things I would suggest playing around with for added creaminess. Just be careful not to add too much or it will interfere with that delicious peppermint flavor. You can also add a bit of full-fat Greek yogurt for a creamy texture.
I like a classic whey protein (use a casein blend if you want), but I like it clean! For that reason, I recommend Ascent’s Native Fuel in chocolate flavor.
If you follow this recipe exactly, it’s not vegan or dairy-free due to the milk and whey protein powder. However, you can easily tweak that by using plant protein and almond milk or similar!
Alright – now that we’ve settled all of your burning questions, let’s get to the recipe.
